An Enrolled Agent is a federally authorized tax practitioner with technical expertise in the field of taxation. They are empowered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the IRS for audits, collections, and appeals.

To achieve the EA designation, candidates must pass a rigorous three-part examination that covers all aspects of federal taxation. The exam demands extensive knowledge on individual and business tax returns, as well as representation, practices, and procedures. In addition to passing the examination, EAs must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years to maintain their status.
